For contributors

Bring a point of view.
Bring the evidence.

Reporting, essays, conversations, and original editorial art with something to say.

Before you begin

We are preparing the first issue. Please wait for an opening call before preparing work specifically for the magazine. This page is guidance, not a commission.

What belongs here

Reportage that follows a consequential question through a place, its people, and the record. A manageable subject with depth is more useful than a grand subject at a distance.

Cultural criticism with close attention to the work and a defensible argument. Books, art, performance, images, and the rituals of public life are all part of the territory.

Interviews and conversations that draw on direct experience and get past familiar answers.

Original illustration and photography that do editorial work. An image can notice, question, contradict, or reveal.

What a useful pitch will tell us

  • The question or argument in a few clear sentences.
  • Why it matters, and why you are the person to pursue it.
  • The access, sources, documents, or work you will draw on.
  • The reporting already completed and what remains.
  • The likely form and scope, with relevant examples of your work.
  • Any prior publication, rights commitments, or material conflicts.

A pitch need not pretend to know what reporting has yet to establish. Tell us what could change your mind.

Agree on the work before doing it.

Every accepted commission should establish the scope, fee, approved expenses, delivery date, revision expectations, rights, credit, and cancellation terms in writing.

Rates and an editorial contact will be published with the opening call. There is no submission fee or payment form on this site.

We expect source notes with substantial reporting, accurate quotation records, and permission records for supplied images. Read the editorial standards for the working requirements.
